2012 YEAR OF THE DRAGON
21 Dec 2011 - Posted by: Maki - WAVE Creative.
In Japan there are 12 ‘Year of' animals and 2012 is the year of the Dragon.
There is the story about how the ‘Year of' animals came into existence.
One day god decided that we should have an animal leader for each new year. So he told all the animals there would be a race on new years day and the first 12 animals across the finish line will be those chosen. They will become the leader of each year.
The cat wasn't there when the god made the announcement. So the rat told to cat that the race is next day after new years day.
The ox started to walk the night before, because he knew he was slow. The rat quietly climbed up the ox"s back and travelled and caught a ride all the way.
Early in the morning of new years day, the ox finally saw the finish line. Just before he crossed the line, the rat jumped from his back and said "Happy new year god! I am the first one?"
So the ox came second. Then the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and wild pig.
The cat came to race the next day, but he realised the rat had lied to him.
That's why the cat always chase the rat now days.
We believe the year of the animal when you are born will be your guardian.
Here are the stories for each animal.
RAT
1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996
People born in the Year of the Rat work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful.
OX
Year: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997
They are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed.
TIGER
Year: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998
Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered.
Yes it"s me (Maki).
RABBIT
Year: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999
They are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky.
DRAGON
Year: 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000
Dragon people are healthy, energetic, excitable, short-tempered, and stubborn. They are also honest, sensitive, brave, and they inspire confidence and trust.
SNAKE
Year: 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001
They say little and possess great wisdom. They never have to worry about money; they are financially fortunate. Snake people are often quite vain, selfish, and a bit stingy. Although calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate. Snake people are usually good-looking and sometimes have marital problems because they are fickle.
HORSE
Year: 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002
They are cheerful, skilful with money, and perceptive, although they sometimes talk too much.
SHEEP
Year: 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003
They are elegant and highly accomplished in the arts. But sheep year people are often shy, pessimistic, and puzzled about life. Sheep people are wise, gentle, and compassionate.
MONKEY
Year: 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004
Clever, skilful, and flexible, they are remarkably inventive and original and can solve the most difficult problems with ease. They want to do things now, and if they cannot get started immediately, they become discouraged and sometimes leave their projects.
ROOSTER
Year: 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005
They are deep thinkers, capable, and talented. They like to be busy and are devoted beyond their capabilities and are deeply disappointed if they fail. They can be selfish and too outspoken, but are always interesting and can be extremely brave.
DOG
Year: 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006
They have a deep sense of loyalty, are honest, and inspire others confidence because they know how to keep secrets. They can be cold emotionally and sometimes distant at parties.
WILD PIG
Year: 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007
People born in the Year of the Pig are chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength. They don"t make many friends but they make them for life, and anyone having a friend is fortunate for they are extremely loyal. They don"t talk much but have a great thirst for knowledge. They are kind to their loved ones. No matter how bad problems seem to be, they try to work them out, honestly if sometimes impulsively.
Wish everybody has great new year!

I was recently very lucky to be able to spend a few weeks with my family travelling to Los Angeles and then on to Mexico. There were many highlights including the Mayan Rivera where we did heaps of snorkelling with colourful tropical fish and Mexico City where we OD"d on galleries, theatre, museums, historic buildings and ancient ruins. I took over 850 photographs along the way. Here are just a few of my favourites

HOW TYPOGRAPHY CAN MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
9 Nov 2011 - Posted by: Brendan - WAVE Creative Strategist, Director.
This made me go all warm and fuzzy. Graphic design for humanity.
Christian Boer of studiostudio, a graphic designer with dyslexia, has created a font called "Dyslexie" that is designed to emphasize the differences between similar letters to make it easier for dyslexics to read.
Watching my kids learning how to read made me truly appreciate how difficult it can be to distinguish letters of the Roman alphabet. If you think about it, a lot of the letters are truly alike - b and p are the same thing with different rotation, v and w look almost the same and so on. Dyslexics have even greater trouble because their brains constantly "mix up" these letters.
There's a lot we now know on how to help treat dyslexics, but can our choice of letterform help?

SECRET TALENTS UNLEASHED!
20 Sep 2011 - Posted by: Brendan - WAVE Creative Strategist, Director.
Recently at WAVE we set a challenge to push ourselves to explore creative areas we may not naturally gravitate to. For many of us singing was probably the single most scariest thing we could be asked to do. So it was no surprise when that quickly became the idea and before we knew it Mike had written a tune and we all put pen to paper to come up with our own lyrics.
At WAVE we never do things by halves so we thought why not professionally record the song and make a music video at the same time. (Dreams of stardom had gone to our heads, iTunes here we come!) Oh, and did I mention we all had to do it in character as our favourite rockstars!
While having to sing in front of other people terrified a few of us we also uncovered some truly amazing unrealized talent. Here are a few picks of the day. The song has been recorded and mixed but really needs the video to do it justice - watch this space.
